Louisiana Healthcare Connections Brings Nutrition Home for High-Risk Prenatal Members

Date: 12/02/25

BATON ROUGE, LA– Louisiana Healthcare Connections is expanding its meal delivery services to improve the health outcomes of women with high-risk pregnancies who face food insecurity. This new offering builds on the health plan’s existing meal benefit, which provides nutritious, medically tailored meals to members recovering after a hospital stay.

Through this expansion, eligible high-risk pregnant members can now receive meal delivery services during the prenatal period after a hospital stay. This improves health outcomes for both mother and baby by ensuring consistent access to wholesome, well-balanced nutrition. Poor nutrition during pregnancy is associated with babies experiencing low birth weight, premature delivery, developmental delays, and increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic conditions later in life.

“Proper nutrition is foundational to a healthy pregnancy, especially for members who are high-risk or experiencing food insecurity,” said Dr. Dana Lawson, Sr. Vice President of Population Health & Clinical Operations at Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “With these meal deliveries, we are eliminating a key barrier to health and ensuring that more women have access to the nutritious meals they need for healthier pregnancies and safer deliveries.”

The post-discharge component of the benefit remains available to all eligible members and includes:

  • Two meals per day for seven days following hospital discharge
  • Medically tailored meals that align with each member’s specific health needs
  • Protein shakes provided as needed to support recovery and nutrition goals

All meals are designed by registered dietitians and prepared to support recovery, manage chronic conditions, and promote better overall health. The expanded prenatal benefit is part of Louisiana Healthcare Connections’ commitment to addressing the drivers of health that affect member outcomes, including food insecurity.
