Louisiana Healthcare Connections Supports the Great American Smokeout This November

Baton Rouge, La. Louisiana Healthcare Connections is proud to support the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout on November 21, 2024. This annual event, observed nationwide on the third Thursday of November, serves as a catalyst for individuals seeking to quit smoking and take the first step toward a healthier, smoke-free future.

As part of its commitment to improving health outcomes for Louisianans, Louisiana Healthcare Connections encourages members and communities across the state to participate in this life-changing initiative. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., contributing to heart disease, stroke, and cancer. In Louisiana, nearly 20% of adults smoke, according to the CDC, with higher rates of tobacco-related illnesses reported in vulnerable populations. Additionally, more than 25% of high school students report use of tobacco products.

“Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, and we are here to support every member on their journey to being tobacco-free,” said Louisiana Healthcare Connections Chief Medical Officer, Stewart T. Gordon, M.D., FAAP. “The Great American Smokeout is a great opportunity to start fresh, with resources, encouragement, and the knowledge that every attempt brings you closer to success.”

To help Louisianans quit smoking, Louisiana Healthcare Connections offers a variety of free resources:

  • Nicotine Replacement Therapy: Free patches, gum, or lozenges prescribed by an in-network provider.
  • Online Tools: Craving to Quit® through the Sharecare app with information to support individuals through every step of their quit journey, and a $10 member reward for enrolling. There are also specialized tools through the Start Smart for Your Baby Program to help quit smoking during pregnancy.
  • Digital/Text Support: This is Quitting, with motivational text message support for quitting tobacco and vaping.
  • There is also a $25 member reward for counseling or filling the first medication prescription as it relates to quitting tobacco.

No matter what your reasons are for quitting, and member or not, you can get help to be successful. These services are free to all Louisiana residents age 13 and older who are ready to quit smoking now.

Louisiana Healthcare Connections is encouraging everyone to connect with their healthcare providers or access the free cessation resources available through the Louisiana Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW or enroll online to get access to all the tools and support you need to stop smoking through www.quitwithusla.org.

This November, residents can join the Great American Smokeout by pledging to quit smoking for one day, using it as a stepping stone to long-term cessation.
