Healthy Smiles - Louisiana Healthcare Connections Promotes Dental Health
Date: 02/25/24
Baton Rouge, La. (Feb. 26, 2024) – Recognizing the impact oral health has on a child’s overall health, Louisiana Healthcare Connections, a Medicaid health plan serving the Louisiana Department of Health and a wholly owned subsidiary of Centene Corporation (NYSE: CNC), is reminding the public about the importance of dental health and the availability of fluoride varnish treatments that may contribute to a child’s dental health during February, National Children’s Dental Health Month.
Fluoride varnish is a protective coating a doctor or dentist paints onto a child’s teeth. It takes less than two minutes to apply and dries almost instantly. The coating helps make the outer layer of their tooth enamel harder and stronger. As a result, the child is less likely to get cavities and experience tooth decay.
It is recommended that children receive fluoride varnish treatments as their teeth start coming in. Pediatricians are trained to apply fluoride varnish because many young children do not see or have access to a dentist until they are older. So, either a dentist or doctor can provide fluoride varnish treatments.
“As part of our ongoing commitment to provide for the full spectrum of healthcare needs and care for Louisiana families, we are recommending parents take the time to talk with their physicians about dental health and fluoride varnish treatments for their children,” stated Louisiana Healthcare Connections Chief Medical Officer, Stewart T. Gordon, M.D., FAAP.
