Help Prevent Suicide: Know The Signs

On average, one person dies from suicide in Louisiana every 13 hours, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in our state.
You can make a difference by knowing how to recognize the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and by knowing what to do when you see those signs in yourself or a loved one.
Warning Signs of Suicide:
- Threats of suicide or talk of death
- Sense of hopelessness
- Suddenly giving away personal items
- Increased use of alcohol or drugs
- Isolation from family and friends
- Sleeping too much or too little
Suicide Risk Factors:
- A history of suicide in the family
- Previous suicide attempts
- Alcohol and drug use
- A diagnosed mood disorder such as depression or bipolar disorder

What To Do:
