Informational Bulletin 22-11: Removal of NPI Requirement – Direct Service Workers of Behavioral Health PCS

Date: 04/06/22

On April 4, 2022, the Louisiana Department of Health released Informational Bulletin 22-11: Removal of NPI Requirement – Direct Service Workers of Behavioral Health PCS.

On February 21, 2022, the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) published the Personal Care Services (PCS) chapter in the Behavioral Health Services Provider Manual. The Provider Qualifications section has requirements for the staff rendering PCS to have an NPI number, which was to be included on any claim submitted by that provider agency for Medicaid reimbursement. At this time, LDH is rescinding the requirement for staff to have an NPI number for this service effective for dates of service beginning on or after April 4, 2022.

Revisions to the LDH Behavioral Health Service Provider Manual have been completed. Agency qualification "9. Have a National Provider Identification (NPI) number, and include the agency NPI number and the NPI number of the individual rendering PCS on its behalf on all claims for Medicaid reimbursement, where applicable" and Staff qualification "13. Have an NPI number which must be included on any claim submitted by that provider agency for reimbursement, where applicable" were removed .

Providers are encouraged to review the entire Informational Bulletin for additional information.
