LDH Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
Date: 05/02/25
Louisiana Healthcare Connections would like to share with providers the LDH Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.
The purpose of the Louisiana Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program is to eliminate childhood lead poisoning in Louisiana through a comprehensive approach. We accomplish this by:
- Making sure that healthcare providers are testing children under the age of 6 for lead in their blood
- Testing homes for lead hazards so we can help identify ways to reduce or eliminate lead in the home
Resources for You: Check out the MCH Lead Poisoning Prevention Toolkit. This toolkit, created by AMCHP, is packed with innovative practices and methods from nine state teams. It's part of a three-year Collaborative Improvement and Innovation Network (CoIIN) aimed at improving access to services for pregnant women, infants, children, and families exposed to lead.
Key Points to Remember:
- No Safe Lead Level: Even low levels of lead in blood can cause health problems.
- Common Sources: Lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust are the biggest culprits for young children.
- Testing is Essential: A blood lead test is the only way to know if a child has lead poisoning.
