Louisiana Healthcare Connections Encourages Moms to Prioritize Mental Health
Date: 04/15/25
Baton Rouge, La. – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Louisiana Healthcare Connections is shining a light on the importance of maternal mental health. As families across Louisiana celebrate Mother’s Day, the health plan is reminding moms that their mental well-being is just as important as their physical health.
Being a mother is one of life’s greatest joys, but it can also bring stress, anxiety, and depression. Research shows that 1 in 5 women experience a mental health condition, and many go untreated due to stigma, lack of time, or difficulty accessing care.
“Too often, mothers put their own well-being last,” said Dr. Dana Lawson, Sr. Vice President of Population Health and Clinical Operations at Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “This May, we want moms to know they are not alone. Taking care of your mental health is not selfish—it’s essential for you and your family.”
Ways to support maternal mental health this May:
- Encourage moms to take breaks and practice self-care.
- Support policies that improve access to mental health services for women.
- Connect mothers with professional resources, support groups, and community networks.
- Share personal stories to help break the stigma around maternal mental health.
Louisiana Healthcare Connections is committed to removing barriers to mental health care by offering:
- Telehealth services for convenient, private mental health support
- Behavioral health programs for anxiety, depression, and postpartum care
- Community-based resources to help moms find local support networks
Through these services, Louisiana Healthcare Connections ensures that mothers—whether they are expecting, new moms, or seasoned parents—can get the help they need.
“As we celebrate Mother’s Day, it’s important to recognize that moms need more than just flowers and cards—they need support, understanding, and access to mental health resources,” said Louisiana Healthcare Connections, CEO and Plan President Jamie Schlottman. “When moms are mentally healthy, families and communities thrive. Together, we can create a healthier Louisiana.”
