Louisiana Healthcare Connections Takes Action During National Hunger Action Month

Date: 09/09/25

BATON ROUGE, LA – In recognition of September as National Hunger Action Month, Louisiana Healthcare Connections is deepening its commitment to the fight against food insecurity with expanded support for the Northshore Food Bank. This includes the sponsorship of a new 20-foot box truck, which will strengthen the Food Bank’s capacity to serve families in St. Tammany Parish.

Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative led by Feeding America, raises awareness and inspires action to end hunger in America. In Louisiana, where 1 in 6 residents struggle with food insecurity, Louisiana Healthcare Connections is answering the call through funding, volunteering, and community outreach efforts.

“We know that hunger is a health issue,” said Jamie Schlottman, Plan President of Louisiana Healthcare Connections. “Access to nutritious food plays a critical role in overall well-being, especially for children, seniors, and individuals managing chronic illnesses. Our support for food banks and other nutrition programs across Louisiana reflects our ongoing commitment to building healthier communities.”

Louisiana Healthcare Connections recently joined the Northshore Food Bank and CGP Enterprises to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of a new box truck, made possible through dedicated sponsorships. This addition expands the Food Bank’s capacity to safely collect food donations and deliver vital resources to families through remote distributions across the region.

“We cannot thank enough both Louisiana Healthcare Connections as our major sponsor and CGB Enterprises as our fleet partner, for their belief in and support of our mission.  Their continued partnership with Northshore Food Bank demonstrates their deep investment in our community and our shared mission to bring food access to those who need it most,” said Yvette Roussel, CEO of Northshore Food Bank. “We’re proud to partner with these organizations that share our mission of improving lives through access to healthy food.”

Northshore Food Bank has served the community since 1984, providing access to basic needs through its various supplemental nutrition programs. Serving more than 300 individuals and families each week, the Food Bank works tirelessly to achieve its mission of a hunger-free Northshore.

“At CGB, we’re proud to support the incredible mission of the Northshore Food Bank,” said Eric Slater, Chief Executive Officer of CGB. “This partnership is rooted in a shared belief: that every family deserves access to fresh, nourishing food. As a company deeply connected to agriculture and the food supply chain, we understand the vital role that food security plays in building strong, healthy communities. This commitment reflects the heart of who we are—dedicated to supporting families and strengthening the communities we serve.”

For nearly a decade, Louisiana Healthcare Connections has partnered with Northshore Food Bank, contributing both funding and volunteer support. Its most recent commitment — $30,000 annually for three years — helps sponsor the new truck and the Food Bank’s food distribution boxes.

Additionally, the health plan has made funding available across the state for community food distributions, school-based pantries, and medically tailored food programs.
