Love Heals: Baton Rouge Free Clinic seeks volunteer medical, dental and vision providers

What: Love Heals – Baton Rouge Free Clinic

When: 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Friday, March 15, and 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday, March 16

Where: Baton Rouge Airport Multiplex Building, 4400 Airpark Blvd., Baton Rouge

For the second year, area residents will be able to see doctors, dentists and optometrists for free at the Baton Rouge Free Clinic. Last year, it took more than 1,500 volunteers to bring much-needed dental, medical and vision care to over 1,400 families and individuals in need over the span of three days.

This year’s two-day clinic is expected to provide care to more than 1,000 uninsured and underinsured Louisiana residents of all ages from across the state. Once again, volunteers are needed to make it happen. Organizers are currently seeking:

  • Dental volunteers: Dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental office staff
  • Vision volunteers: Optometrists, opthalmologists, opticians, technicians, vision office staff
  • Medical volunteers: MDs, RNs, Pas, LPNs, NPs, Chiropractors, MTs, PTs
  • General volunteers: Hospitality, patient registration, interpreters, hair stylists and barbers, food service, security, parking attendants, more

The equipment and supplies needed to operate the clinic will be provided, included about 35 dental and exam chairs, vision and medical clearance equipment needed to serve approximately 400 patients per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to volunteer for the entire clinic?

No. You don’t have to be at the clinic every day, or even all the hours the clinic is in operation. You are welcome to volunteer for as much time as you can commit. The clinic volunteer schedule is as follows:

  • March 13, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.: Set up day
  • March 15, 6 a.m. – 7 p.m.: Clinic day
  • March 16, 6 a.m. – 7 p.m.: Clinic day
  • March 16, 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.: Teardown

Is there liability/malpractice insurance for volunteers?

Yes. All volunteers are covered by the clinic’s malpractice and liability insurance policy once the volunteer waiver is signed.

Will meals be provided for volunteers?

Yes. Snacks and meals will be provided for volunteers during the two clinic days.

Do I need to check in when I come to volunteer?

Yes. This helps organizers keep track of how many volunteers are on site and to confirm volunteer hours for those who need it.

What kind of services are provided?

Attendees can get fillings, extractions, and cleaning in the dental department. Eye exams and prescription glasses will be available in the vision department. General medical services will be offered in the medical department. There are no root canals, crowns, dentures, or eye contacts offered at this clinic.

Will there be childcare for volunteers?

No. Childcare will not be available to attendees or volunteers.

Can minors volunteer?

Volunteers must be at least age 14. Any volunteer under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or adult supervisor, and must have a waiver signed by their parent or guardian. No children under the age of 18 are allowed to work in the dental area.
