3 Helpful WIC Tools Your Family Should Know About
Date: 03/16/26
WIC is a program that provides extra nutrition support for Women, Infants, and Children. That support includes much more than just healthy food. Below are three tools that make getting the most out of WIC benefits easier for Louisiana families that qualify.
1. Should you apply for WIC? This tool can tell you in five minutes or less!
Most people know pregnant women can apply for WIC. But moms, dads, foster parents and anyone else raising children under 5 years old can also apply. Your total household income will also need to be under a certain limit to get WIC. In Louisiana, if you are enrolled in Medicaid or receive SNAP or TANF benefits, you already meet WIC income requirements.
The USDA’s eligibility tool can help you know if you should apply. Just answer a few questions like where you live, if you are pregnant, and if you have children in your home. If the results say you are likely eligible, apply for Louisiana WIC. You can begin online or in person by visiting your nearest Louisiana WIC clinic.
2. Take the guesswork out of shopping. Get the myWIC app.
WIC benefits can buy healthy foods that provide the nutrition pregnant women, nursing moms, babies, and young children need. These include fruits and vegetables, foods made with whole grains, beans, peanut butter, eggs, and dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt. But, for some foods, not every brand, size, or flavor can be purchased with WIC.
Knowing all your options at a glance can cut down your shopping time. It can also help you make smart swaps if your usual WIC-eligible brand is sold out. To make choosing the right items easier, Louisiana WIC has a helpful how-to video and shopping guide.
To get the guide on your smartphone or tablet, download the myWIC app for iOS or Android.
- For each type of food, there are photos of the items and brands you can buy with WIC. Match the pictures to the items you see on the store shelf.
- If the item has a barcode, just scan it! The app will tell you if the item can be purchased with your WIC benefits.
- Bonus – you can use the app to create a grocery list, find stores that accept WIC EBT payments, schedule appointments at a WIC clinic, and more.
- Want to print the guide instead? View a printer-friendly version online (PDF).
