Informational Bulletin 22-8: Coverage of Human Milk Storage Bags as DME Benefit

On March 29, 2022, the Louisiana Department of Health issued Informational Bulletin 22-8: Coverage of Human Milk Storage Bags as DME Benefit.
Below is a summary of the bulletin:
Effective February 1, 2022, the Louisiana Department of Health will cover human milk storage bags for lactating beneficiaries. The following criteria will be applied for coverage of human milk storage bags:
- Prescription signed by prescribing physician;
- Documentation that beneficiary is lactating (This can be included in the prescription or submitted separately);
- Storage bags are limited to 100 bags per month; and
- The Medicaid fee on file is for a one-month supply of storage bags.
The Durable Medical Equipment provider manual and fee schedule will be updated on www.lamedicaid.com.

Louisiana Heatlhcare Connections is in the process of updating our procedure file to reflect the February 1, 2022 effective date within 30 days of notification (Section 17.2.7.3 of the contract).
