Changes to Louisiana Medicaid Pharmacy Copayments

Date: 05/15/19

Rules for pharmacy copayments have changed.

On April 1, 2019, what you pay for your medicine may change. If your family's income is $800 or less each month, you will not have a copay.

Please see the chart below for your possible copay.
Monthly IncomeCopay
$800 or less$0
Medication CostCopay
$10.00 or less$0.50
$10.01-$25.00$1.00
$25.01-$50.00$2.00
$50.01 or more$3.00

There will be more changes on January 1, 2020. At that time, another rule will be applied. In the new rule, the total amount you pay for medicine can't be more than five percent of your family's income each month. Once you spend five percent of your monthly income on pharmacy copays, you will not have any copays for the rest of the month.

These changes will not affect you if you are not required to pay a copay. A copayment is not required for some groups and services, including:

  • Family planning;
  • Emergency services;
  • Members under 21 years of age;
  • Pregnant women; and
  • Native Americans.

If you have questions or think you paid too much, call 1-800-437-9101.
