Understanding Opioid Risks

Date: 07/24/18

Opioids are a type of medicine often used to treat pain. But there are some risks and side effects that are important to understand:

Risk #1: Overdose

Overdose means taking too much of a drug. An opioid overdose can be deadly. Opioids affect the part of the brain that control breathing. An overdose of opioids can slow breathing down too much and even stop a person from breathing. Call 9-1-1 right away if you suspect an overdose in anyone.

Remember: Signs of an overdose include very small pupils in the eyes, slow or stopped breathing and unconsciousness. An overdose can also cause a purple or blue tint to the lips and fingernails, vomiting and cool, damp skin. There are safety tips you can follow to protect yourself from an overdose. Risk #2: Addiction

Opioids are very addictive. Addiction happens when a person has the urge to seek out the medicine and can’t stop taking it. Some people have a higher risk for addiction. If you are prescribed opioids, your doctor should follow up with you regularly and monitor you for signs of addiction. If you think you are forming an addiction, contact your doctor right away.

Risk #3: Side Effects

Opioids often have side effects. They can cause constipation, nausea, sleepiness, impaired motor skills and problems urinating. Opioids can also cause problems with memory, thinking and judgment, especially in older adults. If you have any of these side effects, call your doctor right away.
