6 Tips For A Healthy Pregnancy

A healthy pregnancy always starts with regular prenatal care that begins as soon as you find out you’re pregnant. But what else can you do to help make sure you have a healthy pregnancy?
Know when to call your doctor.
Any time you have pain, strong cramps or vaginal bleeding, you need to call your doctor right away. Other important symptoms that require medical attention are trouble walking, swelling, decreased activity by the baby, and constant nausea and vomiting.
Eat a healthy diet.
What you eat affects your baby’s health, too. Limit sugary foods like soda, cookies and potato chips, and make sure you drink plenty of fluids like water, milk and fruit juice. Try to reduce how much caffeine you take in. And most importantly, make sure you are getting enough of the right food groups every day.
Avoid stress.
Stress is bad for you, and it’s bad for your baby, too. It can contribute to low birth weight and even pre-term birth. As much as you can, try to limit stress. Things like exercise, stretching and meditation can help reduce stress. If stress is something you’re struggling with, make sure you talk to your doctor about it.
Don’t spend too much time sitting or standing.
Standing or sitting for more than four hours at a time may affect the blood flow to your baby and increase swelling in your legs and feet. If you have to be on your feet for long periods of time, be sure to take breaks and sit down. It’s important to stay active, but make sure you don’t overdo it. Talk to your doctor about how to exercise safely during your pregnancy.
Take your prenatal vitamins.
It is important for you to get the right nutrients to help your baby be healthy. Early in your pregnancy, your doctor will talk to you about prenatal vitamins. You can get prenatal vitamins over the counter, or your doctor may prescribe them to you. If taking them makes you feel nauseous, try taking them at night or with a light snack, and make sure you tell your doctor.
Be kind to your feet.
As your pregnancy progresses, your body’s natural weight gain puts extra pressure on your feet. This can cause painful swelling. Wear shoes that offer good support and comfort, and choose a size that’s right for your feet. Don’t forget to let your doctor know if you’re having discomfort due to swelling in your feet and ankles.
