Know Your Rights As A Patient

Date: 06/05/18

As a patient, you have the right to see and get copies of your health information. There are many reasons you might need your health information:

  • To make better decisions about your health and healthcare
  • To make sure your information is correct
  • To share your medical information with your other care providers
  • To keep up with your treatment progress

Having access to your health information is an important part of staying healthy. And because it is your information, it is your right to access it. This right falls under the Health Information Privacy and Accountability Act, or HIPAA.

As a Louisiana Healthcare Connections member, your healthcare rights are important to us. That’s why you have easy access to your healthcare claims information through our easy-to-use, secure member portal. You can also use our portal to change your doctor, update your information, request a new Member ID card and send us a secure message.

Your doctor may also have a secure portal, called a patient portal, where you can safely access your medical information, 24/7. A patient portal gives you access to your health history and lab results. You can also use it to request prescription refills and appointments, and to ask your doctor questions.

If your doctor does not have a patient portal, and you need copies of your medical records, all you have to do is ask for them. Here’s what you need to know about this important right:

  • You do not have to give a reason for wanting copies of your records.
  • Your doctor cannot deny you a copy of your records because of an unpaid bill.
  • Your doctor has the right to charge a reasonable fee for making copies for you.
  • Only you or your authorized personal representative can access your medical records.
  • If you think the information in your records is not correct, you can ask for it to be corrected.
  • If you think your health information privacy rights have been violated, you have the right to file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights.
